Note from the filmmaker, Kevin Barry:
Growing up in Burlington, I saw firsthand how vital skateboarding was as a creative and social outlet. The beauty of skateboarding lies in how fiercely independent it is, but it also wouldn’t exist as we know it without the communities that form around it. The small victory of learning your first kickflip just means more when you have people to share that moment with, and that’s what places like Talent help foster.
When Talent announced they were reopening in a new location, I was inspired by the drive Hannah and the community Talent cultivated had to keep a roof over the Vermont skate scene’s head. I thought I would put together a quick montage of the build-out, a bit of history shared through the footage provided by the filmers who were there through the years, and finish with the grand opening. Then COVID got in the way. This project certainly took longer to finish than anticipated, but it gave me time to explore the impact Talent has had.
Skateboarding has taught me about perseverance and getting out of my comfort zone. It’s taught me about enjoying small victories while never being satisfied. This documentary is a celebration of a community coming together around a shared inspiration.
Thank you, skateboarding.
Thank you, Talent.
